Big Lou - Underground Music Awards

Big Lou, also known as the Spanish Frank White is taking over the underground rap scene in the northeast. Underground Rap Scene caught up with him to get some information about his hustle:

Underground Rap Scene:

First of all I want to thank you for doing the interview and congratulate you on the three awards you took home from the underground music awards.

Big Lou:

Thanks a lot fam.

Underground Rap Scene:

What is it like coming up in Camden , New Jersey and trying to make it in the Rap game? Could you touch on the advantages and disadvantages of trying to make it in Camden ? Also, what’s your favorite part about being from Camden ?

Big Lou:

Camden is only 8 square miles. We’re in between two major cities known for great artists – Philly and New York so we do get overlooked. Growing up in Camden is no different that any other hood. There’s good and bad. We’ve always been known as the Murder Capital but there’s a lot of good in CMD. My favorite part of the City is the people. A lot of the people are real here. They’re caught up in the struggle rather than being mad at God for raising their kids in a city like this. Growing up in CMD made me a stronger man. I thank God everyday for allowing me be raised in the struggle which at the end of the day helps me deal with adversity.

Underground Rap Scene:

Could you explain your journey in the rap game to this point, and how you got involved with Lost City Records and Street Sweepers Ent.?

Big Lou:

I’ve been doing this for a minute. I always had a crazy buzz in Jersey and Philly. I do a lot of shows and dropped an independent album that sold over 3500 units in only 8 square miles. Last year I stepped up my grind and started doing shows in New York . After killing every show my buzz in NYC started to grow. That’s when I met Kay Slay.

Underground Rap Scene:

I know you’ve been working with some big names in the New York rap scene such as DJ Kay Slay. Could you share some of your experiences working with some of the best New York has to offer?

Big Lou:

Kay Slay is a Legend. Hem is Hip Hop. He understands this business and I’m learning from him everyday. His knowledge makes my flow tighter and my tracks more powerful just by the guidance and directions he gives me.

Underground Rap Scene:

Could you name a DJ or artist who helped you out on your way to the top of the rap game, if any, and explain how they helped you?

Big Lou:

Kay Slay embraced me. Everything else came from my own grind. It’s been a long lonely road but I fought threw all the trials and tribulations to make it this far. At the end it’s all worth it because I’m with Streetsweepers now.

Underground Rap Scene:

What has winning three awards at the Underground Music Awards done for your career?

Big Lou:

It’s cool to get awards but most importantly I think those awards sent a message that real hip hop is not dead. I was the only unsigned artist nominated against acts with major deals and the end, the people spoke out and gave me the award for Best Rapper, Most Original Artist, and Song of the Year. Shout out to Jesse Jess and the whole Urban Threshold team for supporting the underground community.

Underground Rap Scene:

What are you currently working on, and when you aren’t busy in the studio how are you spending your time?

Big Lou:

Me and Slay are working on some new hot shit which you will hear soon. If I ain’t in the lab with Slay or with my Lost City Niggaz, I’m writing and spending time with my family enjoying life.

Underground Rap Scene:

Who would you say is your biggest influence?

Big Lou:

Other than my mom who raised me in a rough environment – musically I would have to say Rakim. He captivated me when my older brother made me listen to a lot of old School joints. To me he painted a picture of the struggle that people in the hood go through and it made me want to paint a picture lyrically. It made me become the voice of a city that has been overlooked.

Underground Rap Scene:

Who are you listening to when you aren’t playing your own tracks?

Big Lou:

I listen to a lot of Old School shit like Slick Rick, Rakim of course, G-Rap, Big Daddy Kane, Doug E Fresh, Jay & Nas, and classical shit.

Underground Rap Scene:

When do you expect to release your next album or mixtape?

Big Lou:

It’s in the works. I’ll let everyone know when it’s ready. It’ll be soon.

Underground Rap Scene:

Could you touch on what you’ve learned from going on tour to promote your music and performing with other up-and-coming, as well as established artists?

Big Lou:

I’ve learned to stay sharp. I treat every show like it’s my last. I learned how to embrace my opportunities because it don’t last forever.
